ALBUM RELEASE: BLACK DOG DAYS

Today marks the release of Black Dog Days, a collection of my songs that pulls from several different periods. “Townes” was originally written in 2009 right after I’d seen Be Here to Love Me and a few of them (“Black Dog Days” and “Those Chandeliers,” for example) were written in 2022 at a songwriting workshop down in Florida with Jorma Kaukonen.

The initial sessions for this album took place in Water Valley, Mississippi at Dial Back Sound in May of 2023. It was such an honor to get to work in that space. So many amazing records have been recorded in that room (including all-time favorites AA Bondy’s When the Devil’s Loose and Justin Peter Kinkel-Schuster’s Constant Stranger)… and then there’s all of the Fat Possum and blues stuff that went down there. Hell, I even sat in T Model Ford’s chair for a track. My old friend Bronson Tew was at the helm, and we cut directly to tape with just me and the ’30 L-0 that I’d just gotten from Jake Wildwood. What I thought was going to be a simple solo record, though, wound up becoming so much more in the ensuing couple of years.

I want to thank Bronson for all of his hard work, dedication, and vision on this project. He not only recorded/engineered the whole thing, but he also mixed/mastered it AND played drums, bass, and guitar all over it. All of the steel guitars were played by Travis Talbert who is hands down one of the most versatile musicians I’ve ever encountered. All of the upright bass was handled by the inimitable John Kveen, a stalwart of the Oxford community and the low end maestro with Jimbo Mathus and the Squirrel Nut Zippers. All of the artwork, design, etc. was my own creation (for better or worse), and all of the songs are written by me except for the obvious “Dead Flowers” cut.

At any rate, I hope that you give it a listen and enjoy it. I’m both incredibly proud of it and incredibly grateful for its existence. To Bronson, Travis, and John, thanks so much for all of your effort. I’m forever indebted to you for lending your talents to these songs.
